Does anyone think there will be plans in the works for a Soyuz undocking and fly-around during the final shuttle flight to photograph it docked to the station?

The Russians took pictures of Atlantis docked to Mir during STS-71, and it would be most appropriate to have some of the ISS with the vehicle that gave birth to it alongside.

Has anyone with Houston connections asked this question?

Flight rules currently restrict any vehicles arriving or departing while the space shuttle is docked at the space station.

Though I agree that such a photo-opp would result in an iconic image, I suspect that the risks (however major or minor they may be) to the crew and vehicles would rule out any such fly-around.

There have been several photographs taken over the years that show the orbiter docked to the station from the vantage point of either end of the station's truss, as well as by astronauts riding the station's arm.

Yes those are some great shots, but I believe some of the best were never to be had due to a camera failure, when Scott Parazynski was way out on the solar array (if my memory is correct).

Would you think there is a chance that some attempt might be made during a scheduled EVA to get a good series of photos? This might be done with either some sort of telescoping pole or maybe a tethered SAFER flight.

I just think it would be tragic if we got through the entire shuttle/ISS assembly without an image that shows what this incredible pair of vehicles look like together in orbit.

All other sorts of options exist... a remotely operated camera, dust off an MMU from the Smithsonian...

All times are CT (US)
