NASA's shuttle-era locomotives rerouted

The last two of the NASA Railroad EMD SW1500 locomotives at the Kennedy Space Center have been delivered to new homes on short line railroads.

Locomotive no. 1 will be put into use by the Natchitoches Parish Port in Louisiana. Locomotive no. 3 will be used by the Madison Railroad in Indiana for regular freight service and passenger excursion train service.

Locomotive no. 2 was earlier delivered to the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, Florida for restoration and eventual use.

All three locomotives were originally acquired by NASA in 1983 from the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railroad. They were used primarily to carry the solid rocket booster segment cars and flight hardware on the NASA Railroad for the space shuttle program.

Since this post is the only reason I knew these unique locomotives were nearby, I thought it only right to post some recent photos of the locomotive. My in-laws live in Madison, Indiana, and I've hoped to see the train since it arrived. I had the chance a couple of weeks ago.

The locomotive has been repainted to the colors of the Madison Railroad and looks like it's in great shape. It is part of an extensive collection of locomotives and freight cars they hold.

The Madison Railroad is located on the grounds of the former U.S. Army Jefferson Proving Grounds, which has been repurposed for several worthwhile uses by the community. Here's what the Solid Rocket Booster train looks like today.

All times are CT (US)
