 Download the high resolution version (1.7mb) These seven astronauts take a break from training to pose for the STS-123 crew portrait. From the right (front row) are astronauts Dominic L. Gorie, commander; and Gregory H. Johnson, pilot. From the left (back row) are astronauts Richard M. Linnehan, Robert L. Behnken, Garrett E. Reisman, Michael J. Foreman and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Takao Doi, all mission specialists. Reisman is scheduled to join Expedition 16 as flight engineer after launching to the International Space Station on mission STS-123. Something tells me the background is less natural then it seems .... as natural as Photoshop .... ------------------

The natural scenery background is different. I like it, however, the lighting on the individuals just doesn't blend with the whole picture. |

Jürgen, Du hast natürlich Recht. Jürgen, you are right, but as lunarrv15 already says, it looks different to the most crew portraits of the last years. To exchange a background is not problematic with modern methods of photography. The Eastfrisian |

They've done plenty of backgrounds with the orbiter sitting on the runway at dusk (such as STS-121's portrait), so those might also potentially be classified as "natural" backgrounds as well since they are outdoors I suppose. Now if they had REALLY shot this one outdoors, I would expect the entire crew to be using some sort of cooling fans as those ACES suits would be getting pretty hot in that Florida sunshine. More then likely a real portrait like that would have them in their blue flightsuits instead.I like this mission patch. The coloring on it is great and it is quite unique in its layout IMHO. Who designed it? |

Was the Apollo 17 portrait that last official crew portrait session that actually took place outdoors? |

The STS-42 crew was photographed outside; in front of a pond at JSC. The space shuttle launch in the background was photoshopped, obviously. |

But the suit is yellow orange, and not red orange! The color is changed? |

No, the ACES' color hasn't changed; its just a matter of the lighting in which they were photographed. I've taken shots at walkout where the suits ranging from the hue shown in this portrait to their almost appearing as red. |
