I have a question that maybe someone here can answer for me.
With the Expedition 13 crew launching tomorrow (3/29), is there any reason why third crew member Thomas Reiter couldn't launch with them, instead of waiting until July on STS-121?
Wouldn't it make more sense to fly the Brazilian astronaut on "121" and have Reiter launch earlier with his crew mates?

The station won't be able to support a three-person crew until the shuttle is flying regularly again.

This isn't the first time a Soyuz has launched with the idea that Reiter might be joining the crew later. Had he launched on one of those, the station could have ended up short on supplies.

As an additional question on this topic:

Reiter's stint on the ISS will overlap Expeditions 13 and 14, he will be a member of both crews.
Is it the plan to have an continuous ESA presence on the station with the ESA astronaut overlapping the US/Russian crew stints?

No, Reiter will be replaced by Sunita Williams, a NASA astronaut, when his six months end. If I remember correctly, Reiter's flight was the result of Russia selling ESA one of their long duration spots. ESA's long duration "tickets" do not begin formally until their module, Columbus has been launched.

Has anyone heard if the "updated" Expedition 13 crew patch will be available for sale once Thomas Reiter is launched to the ISS? I have seen NASA TV display the three-person crew patch several times on broadcasts.

The latest information from AB Emblem is that the patch has been approved for production.
Will be available in about 4 - 6 weeks.

Hope that helps,
Harald
