I've been reading on another space related website that on the STS-27 mission, the "secret" Lacrosse satellite was released from Atlantis and immediately ran into problems. It goes on to say that Atlantis' crew was required to rendezvous with the satellite and "make repairs", implying that astronauts Ross and/or Shepherd performed an EVA. Was wondering if anyone here heard anything about this spacewalk, or any other DoD shuttle spacewalks? Thanks. |

I think we may never know for real. I have always had a guess that there was one. I have a NASA photo of Jerry Ross from STS-27 in a shuttle EMU with the STS-27 patch on it. I know it means nothing but it will add fuel to the fire, so to speak. |

I interviewed Jerry Ross in September 2002 and I also asked if he made a spacewalk during the STS-27 mission his reply was: quote:
It was a DoD mission, I could tell you but then I have to shoot you.

After looking at quite a few astronaut portraits, it seems like every one posing in the WSS and EMU (and mission patch) did in fact conduct an EVA, or in the case of Tom Jones on STS-80 was scheduled to do one.Maybe there was an EVA on STS-27. |

Reminds me of when I went to see Robert Gibson in 1989 in Cooperstown, NY. At that time, nothing was supposed to have been known publicly about the DoD mission other than the Shuttle went up and came down.What Gibson said - and the timing is why he talked about the 27R mission rather than his earlier Mission 61C - was something to the effect of, "My recent mission was for the Defense Department and I can't talk much about it, but I'm here to give Cooperstown something from my flight." And me in the front row, all I could think of was, "Yeah, you deployed a Lacrosse military satellite, according to Aviation Week" but wisely kept my mouth shut, otherwise I might have been arrested. |

That was kind of like Dick Covey when I ment him. It was between the time of STS-38 and when he got STS-61. He did show the STS-26 film which was great. Sorry to go off topic but anyone know if it is somewhere on the web of the stuff that Robin Williams did for STS-26 and the funny wake up calls that the Capcoms used to do. |

In the book "Space Shuttle: The First 20 Years", Hoot Gibson gives the most complete answer to this STS-27 question. Look on page 66 - "A medal we could only wear in a safe."Tim |

I've always assumed the picture of Ross in an EMU was taken for the flight of STS-37 when he was scheduled to perform an EVA. The STS-27 patch was simply there to show his earlier flight and the STS-37 was not yet available. He could also have been photographed in an EMU suit becuase of his previous EVA's on 6-1B, although it is surprising that patch isn't on his suit. |
