I thought that perhaps some of you here might be interested in an article written by shuttle astronaut Thomas Jones. It comes from St. Anthony Messenger which is a magazine published by Franciscan monks. For me, it was a moving and interesting article. It described eloquently the experience of space flight and, as so many others before him, the spiritual side as well.

What a refreshing difference of opinion from a lady at church who told me that, "If God had meant for us to go to space, we would have been put there in the first place - we weren't, and we have no business going there". Ouch. I agree with Astronaut Jones that the more one explores, the more one learns about anything, including religion. If we were meant to stay in one place, we would not have been gifted with curiosity. Now, maybe God intended this lady to be one of those to keep the home fires burning, but I can't believe she can't see exploration for its ability to be a spiritual experience if one IS so inclined.

Next time you see her, tell her that we ARE in space. The earth itself moves through space so God did indeed mean for us to be there! :-)
