Anybody catch wind of Mad Mike Hughes?
Seeking to prove that a conspiracy of astronauts fabricated the shape of the Earth, a California man intends to launch himself 1,800 feet high on Saturday in a rocket he built from scrap metal.

Assuming the 500-mph, mile-long flight through the Mojave Desert does not kill him, Mike Hughes told the Associated Press, his journey into the atmosflat will mark the first phase of his ambitious flat-Earth space program.

I wouldn't wait until Sunday to try and get an autograph from him. While Saturday is just a test flight, I don't know... You gotta admire his spunk though. Building a launch pad out of a used motorhome he bought on Craigslist too! His four cats will probably miss him.

Was reading about this last night, kind of brings back some memories of Evel Knievel's Snake River Canyon stunt.

Apparently "Mad Mike" is not a Knievel fan:
"He was an average stunt guy."
Of course, our own resident stuntman, Eddie Braun (cS: Crsh4Csh), successfully rode a rocket-powered craft over Snake River Canyon in 2016.

This guy is great... he either stays in character quite well or is a certified nut. His first flight is just in the atmosflat not atmosphere, but atmosflat!

Then, let's see, he is going to reach 500mph and go for one mile... I don't know how to calculate G-force, but that is going to be quite a ride.

Hughes' launch, planned for today, has been delayed "after he couldn't get permission from a federal agency to conduct it on public land," reports the Washington Post.
Hughes claimed the Bureau of Land Management said he couldn't launch his rocket as planned Saturday in Amboy. He claimed the federal agency had given him verbal permission more than a year ago, pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

A BLM spokeswoman said its local field office had no record of speaking with Hughes and that he had not applied for the necessary special recreation permit to hold an event on public land...

The BLM's denial, along with some technical difficulties — a motor in his modified motor home quit working for a day — threw a wrench into his plans, according to Hughes.

"I don't see [the launch] happening until about Tuesday, honestly," he said. "It takes three days to set up... You know, it's not easy because it's not supposed to be easy."

You just know what people of this type, if something happens to him, people will just say that someone who is part of the conspiracy to silence flat earthers killed him in the rocket just to shut him up.

Even if he succeeds, it won't matter what he sees or experiences, he'll just declare it 'proves' the world is flat. And the flat earthers will believe it.

I swear, people are truly becoming more stupid every day, questioning something that was pretty much proven in Ancient Greece...

Maybe I'm missing something here; can you even see a curvature of the Earth at only 1800 ft up? If not, what's the point? He'll probably say all he saw was flatness and then...

This flight is just sponsored by "Research Flat Earth." He says he is planning a follow-on flight "miles above Earth," which is when he will report whether the Earth is flat, or not.

Surprised the FAA hasn’t put a stop to this one.

This is good, finally someone doing research into flat earth after so many years. Mad Mike Hughes is boldly trying to go where no flat earth-er could possibly go. His attempt to shatter the ceiling of known flat earth boundaries and ride a rocket to the literal edge of space and earth. I doubt he will see the curvature of earth because a flat surface has no curvature but he may discover where all them darn fangled rocket ships go. Good luck.

They say you need to be 35,000+ feet in air to see the curvature of Earth on a clear day, so not sure what 1,800 feet is going to do. Be much easier and cheaper just to grab a transatlantic flight on a 757 and take a few pictures from the window seat... Just saying.

Hughes is now targeting Monday (Dec. 4) for his launch, though there may be more delays. In the meantime, the Associated Press has reached out to astronaut Jerry Linenger for comment:
"When I am in space, it is a sphere. It is a curve. The Earth is not flat," said retired NASA astronaut and doctor Jerry Linenger, who orbited the globe more than 2000 times during four months in 1997. "I circled it every 90 minutes and it is a real thing."

As for the amateur rocket launch?

"Good luck, I hope he doesn't blow something up," Linenger said. "Rocketry, as our private space companies found out, isn't as easy as it looks."

Mike Hughes finally launched in his rocket on Saturday (March 24), reaching about 1,875 feet into the air before making a hard landing in the Mojave Desert, the Associated Press reports. (Photo credit: Matt Hartman; see here for video)
Sometime after 3 p.m. PDT, and without a countdown, Hughes' rocket soared into the sky.

Hughes reached a speed that [helper Waldo] Stakes estimated to be around 350 mph before pulling his parachute. Hughes was dropping too fast, though, and he had to deploy a second one. He landed with a thud and the rocket's nose broke in two places like it was designed to do.

"This thing wants to kill you 10 different ways," said Hughes, who had an altimeter in his cockpit to measure his altitude. "This thing will kill you in a heartbeat.

"Am I glad I did it? Yeah. I guess. I'll feel it in the morning. I won't be able to get out of bed. At least I can go home and have dinner and see my cats tonight."

"Mad" Mike Hughes is believed to possibly be dead after launching himself in the air with a self-made rocket that crash-landed.

The well-known daredevil and amateur rocket-engineer was doing a rocket launch Saturday in what appears to be near Barstow, CA — where a reporter says Mike propelled himself into the air with a "self-made steam-powered rocket" and then crash-landed into the ground.

The reporter, Justin Chapman, adds, "Very likely did not survive." He tells TMZ ... Mike is confirmed to be dead there on the ground as well.

In the video, you see a parachute fly out of the rocket, but it doesn't appear anyone is using it. The presumption, for now, is that Mike might've stayed in the rocket as it ascended hundreds of feet into the air.

...it may have been getting filmed for a new TV show Mike is a part of in partnership with the Discovery Channel. The show's called "Homemade Astronauts," and it's set to launch sometime in 2020.

Well, regardless of how you felt about "Mad Mike's" science, may he rest in peace.

I'm sorry, but the Discovery Channel should not have been encouraging a man who had obvious mental health issues...

Video looks very similar to Evel Knievel's Skycycle mishap, apart from the fact Knievel had a stroke of luck in his parachute staying connected to the vehicle.

RIP Mad Mike.

As we all know, applying the term "astronaut" to someone who shoots himself/herself only 1800 ft. in the air is quite the misnomer. By those rules, I guess Evel Knievel was an "astronaut."

It reminds me of those TV warnings that they used to broadcast back in the 60s and 70s: "Kids, don't try this at home."

Cleanup on aisle 5... eBay 174252155968:
Up for auction is historical crashed wreckage (only) of a home built rocket that was flown and manned, twice (2 times), by Mad Mike Hughes in Amboy and Barstow in California. No manned steam rocket has ever flown as high as this rocket, and holds the world record. There is still a "For Sale" sign on one of the rocket fins, that was directed by Mad Mike Hughes, to sell the rocket, as soon as the flight was completed.

So what is it worth, about $55 for scrap metal perhaps?

After seeing this series recently, I hope there is no attempt to revive it for a second season.

I found it very disturbing — more in common with circus daredevil acts, rather than competent attempts to create affordable spaceflight technology.

I think viewers were lucky to only see one death on their TV screens...
