The following announcement about the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) is posted at the request of Johnson Space Center Test Subject Support.
JSC-NASA Test Subject Support is recruiting volunteers for a 51-day study to simulate flight operations and confinement. Subjects will spend 30 days in confined habitation in HERA facility at JSC.

Researchers will collect blood, urine, and saliva; study personal behaviors and evaluate team cohesion, cognition and communication.

Volunteers must be US citizens. Volunteers must be healthy, non-smoking individuals, 30 to 55 years, and must pass a physical and psychological assessment to qualify. Subjects must take no medications, have no dietary restrictions, have a BMI of 29 or less, be 74 inches or less in height, and have no history of sleep walking. Subjects must have highly technical skills and a Masters degree in STEM discipline or the equivalent years of work/military experience. Volunteers will be compensated. Interested persons should send their CV for a qualification review to jsc-hera@mail.nasa.gov.

More information about the HERA study may be obtained by calling 281-212-1492. If your CV is approved by the Study Principle Investigator, you will be contacted for further screening. Thank you for your interest.

Thank you to Robert Pearlman and collectSPACE. I initially saw the Human Exploration Research Analog recruitment announcement on this forum and just returned from the final Johnson Space Center screening to find out that I'll be on the next 30-day simulation.

One of the questions an interviewer asked was where I found out about the program. Again, collectSPACE proves how valuable it is to our community.

This is awesome! Looking forward to hearing about your experience.

You are at least the second cS member that has been a HERA crew member (the earlier participant was on a seven-day mission).

HERA is a facility that serves as an analog for the NASA Human Research Program (HRP) to study and evaluate impacts dues to isolation and confined habitation. Primary investigators are looking at psychological and human factor impacts and the development and verification of countermeasures to reduce or mitigate those impacts.

The HERA Campaign 4 will include up to four missions and the missions will simulate a space exploration mission with varying degrees of workload and communications delays. Subjects will spend 45 days in confined habitation in the HERA facility located at JSC. Researchers will collect blood, urine, saliva and feces, study personal behaviors and evaluate team cohesion, cognition and communication.

The crew of four will have a commander, a pilot, and two mission specialists who will be charged with a variety of duties on the trip to an asteroid and transit back. Volunteer Criteria to Participate:

  • US citizens
  • Healthy, non-smoking individuals
  • 30 to 55 years
  • Must pass a physical and psychological assessment to qualify
  • Subjects must not be taking medications
  • Have no dietary restrictions
  • Have a BMI of 29 or less, be 74 inches or less in height
  • No history of sleep walking
  • Must not be claustrophobic
  • Subjects must have highly technical skills and a Masters degree in STEM discipline or the equivalent years of work/military experience.
  • Not pregnant or lactating.
If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, please send your CV for a qualification review to jsc-hera@mail.nasa.gov. If your CV is approved by the Study Principle Investigator, you will be contacted for further screening. More information about the HERA study may be obtained by calling 281-212-1492.
