From Christopher Nolan, "Interstellar" is in theaters November 2014.collectSPACE Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' trailer lifts off with NASA footageAlan Shepard, Neil Armstrong and the space shuttle Atlantis make cameos in the first teaser trailer for "Interstellar," the highly-anticipated 2014 science fiction film from director Christopher Nolan. The two-minute clip features actor Matthew McConaughey narrating a series of scenes mostly borrowed from NASA's history. "We count these moments... when we dared to aim higher, to break barriers — to reach for the stars," McConaughey says. "To make the unknown known." |

That's a depressing teaser. But since it doesn't say much about the movie, there's hope... that it won't be as bad as "The Dark Knight Rises" (same director, saw it Monday). |

While I agree Nolan's last movie wasn't his finest, I chalk that up to sequel-ism. He has lots of other outstanding movies to his credit ("Memento," "Inception," the first Batman re-boot). Nolan is one of the best, most thoughtful filmmakers working today, and am very much looking forward to this one. |

This movie looks exciting. I saw that teaser this morning and am looking forward to that movie even more."The Dark Knight Rises" was not a bad movie by any means. I feel that people wanted it to be another "Dark Knight," but they are all different. That being said, I don't expect this movie to be another "Inception;" it will be better! |

At the risk of sounding a little cranky, I have to express some irritation at retrospectives talking about how "we" did this — "We count these moments... when we dared to aim higher, to break barriers — to reach for the stars..." We didn't. Most of us, like me, were spectators at best (I was 12 in 1969) and only insofar as we were Americans being represented by other Americans were we to be credited. I suppose we all paid the bill, and of course we invested our enthusiasm, but it's too easy to march in the parade for such a nominal version of participation. And remember that for all those who were enthusiasts, millions of others were opponents, skeptics, or just indifferent. The point is, America does things like this with a tiny fraction of its talents and energies, and it often does them despite, not because of, Americans. So waxing nostalgic for the times when we all pulled together to reach for the stars seems a waste — those times never happened. And America doesn't need unanimity for one happen now. Opportunity, Curiosity, Cassini, GRAIL... ask most Americans what those are and you'll get a blank look. Ask them how they feel about multi-billion dollar robotic explorations and many will call it a waste of taxpayer dollars. Ask them how they feel about Chinese rover tracks on the Moon and they'll remember those great days when we all dared to aim higher. |

I don't mean to start a debate, but I believe the "we" he refers to in the trailer is "we" as in mankind, not the USA. They use NASA footage because it is public and readily accessible; I am unsure if they could have used Sputnik footage, Gagarin, or anything like that. One of the synopsis I read said, "In the future, governments and economies across the globe have collapsed, food is scarce, NASA is no more, and the 20th Century is to blame. A mysterious rip in spacetime opens and it's up to whatever is left of NASA to explore and offer up hope for mankind." |

If you really, really, want to know, here is the 2008 script written by Nolan's brother. |

The 2008 script was reportedly the original screenplay when the film was under Steven Spielberg's direction. When Christopher Nolan took over in early 2013, he rewrote the screenplay, incorporating some of the ideas from his brother's script. |

The Washington Post reports that the new trailer for Interstellar is now playing exclusively before IMAX movies at the National Air and Space Museum. Nolan, the director of "Inception" and "The Dark Knight" trilogy, has famously stayed loyal to large-format film stock during cinema's digital revolution. He photographed "Interstellar" on 70 mm and IMAX film; the director's commitment to film, along with the movie's space-travel theme, made it a natural fit with the museum –- one of the only theaters in the region that shows IMAX movies on film, rather than digitally. The Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater will be the only theater showing the trailer until it appears with "Godzilla" when it opens in other theaters throughout the country next week. The "Interstellar" trailer will play before all of the museum's IMAX offerings.Air & Space Museum theaters director Zarth Bertsch said that the trailer's exclusive run will continue at least until "Godzilla's" May 16 opening date, and perhaps longer if it doesn't interfere with the theater's regular programming. (There's even a chance that "Interstellar" will play there during its theatrical run.) "The extra two minutes have made our turnaround time between shows pretty tight," he said. "But we'd like to play it indefinitely if we can." |

There's even a book: Interstellar: Beyond Time and Space: Inside Christopher Nolan's Sci-Fi Epic. In his new film Interstellar, Christopher Nolan takes on the infinite canvas of space to deliver a cutting-edge, emotionally charged adventure that will amaze audiences of all ages. "Interstellar: Beyond Time and Space" documents the making of Nolan's latest masterpiece in fascinating detail and features interviews with the acclaimed director along with screenwriter Jonathan Nolan and other key members of the crew. While delving into the science and philosophy behind the film in satisfying detail, "Interstellar: Beyond Time and Space" dynamically showcases the incredible concept art created for the film, along with rough sketches, storyboards, and other intriguing preproduction elements. Also including interviews with the exceptional cast, including Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, "Interstellar: Beyond Time and Space" features a strong behind-the-scenes component, with candid pictures from the set that illustrate Christopher Nolan's famed preference for elaborate set pieces that involve little or no CGI. Visually enthralling and engrossing in its in-depth treatment of the themes and ideas at the heart of the film, "Interstellar: Beyond Time and Space" is the perfect accompaniment to one of the most anticipated films of 2014. |

So, from what little we can see in the new trailer of the rocket and (a bit more) of the spacecraft, anyone spot any nods to real space history? |

Well, the engines on the rocket (at about 1:07) certainly seem to be inspired by F-1s ... right down to the red cover assembly forward of the turbine exhaust manifold. |

Well, having seen the trailer, I was actually impressed. As I've begun to look a little more into the movie, however, it seems like the trailer may be the best parts of the movie. Not going to give spoilers, but it's not as exciting as I once thought. |

I can think of at least one person who doesn't hold "The Dark Knight" in very high regard — I wasn't very much a fan of "Inception" either.I very much hope he doesn't end up wasting everyone's time with "Interstellar". |

A Saturn V look a like, indeed. Hence the opening line: "We used to look up in the sky and wonder - at our place in the stars. Now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt."And our place is getting dirtier and dirtier... |

collectSPACE 'Interstellar' mission patch revealed in new movie trailerThe mission of the "Interstellar" spaceship Endurance is clear — space exploration — at least based on its newly-revealed mission patch. Paramount and Warner Bros. provided a fresh glimpse at "Interstellar," director Christopher Nolan's upcoming space adventure, in a new trailer released Wednesday (July 30). The two and a half minute preview builds upon the footage previously released in May. (For specific discussion of the patches in "Interstellar," see here.) |

I can see the end scene now, McConaughey is returning to Earth through the wormhole, suddenly disaster strikes and the thing starts collapsing around him, he finds himself half in and half out of the wormhole with the integrity of his capsule collapsing around. He radios back to Houston, the capcom looks anxiously to the Flight Director for a solution, in turn the Flight Director frantically looks to his Flight Controllers they shrug in despair. "Someone must know what to" the Flight Director shouts while looking round Mission Control, suddenly Michael Caine steps forward and utters the words "Hang on Lads, I've got an idea..." cue end credits! |

I spent a few minutes this morning enjoying an immersive look at "Interstellar" — or more specifically the spacecraft from the upcoming film.Paramount partnered with IMAX for a first-of-its-kind Oculus Rift experience, now touring the country. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, kicked off in New York and is now in Houston at the AMC Gulf Pointe 30 through Sunday (Oct. 19). From there it goes to Los Angeles (AMC City Walk, Oct. 25-27) and then on to the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia (Nov. 5-19). The experience itself places you inside the spacecraft designed, and built, for the movie. The filmmakers constructed a full-scale set, which was also used to create this virtual tour. You're guided through the ship, which Paramount's reps say will ready fans for the film's opening in theaters on Nov. 5.

I flew out to Los Angeles late last week to attend a press screening and conference with the cast and crew of "Interstellar." I had the chance to ask questions of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, as well as hear from Christopher and Jonathan Nolan.Articles based on what they said will begin running on collectSPACE this week. With regards to the film, go see it. See it in (true) IMAX if possible, or see it on film on the largest screen available. This movie won't translate nearly as well on the small screen. Relativistic physics has never been so gorgeous. "Interstellar" harkens back to "The Right Stuff" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" in its scope and tone. It has clear call backs to both films but stands on its own for what it achieves. I would suggest not reading reviews until after you have seen the film. The few I have read all included spoilers that will be much more rewarding discovering on the big screen than described in text. I am not going to discuss plot points for the same reason. The articles running on this site will be spoiler-free, with just one exception timed with the opening of the film in theaters. |
