National Air and Space Museum release
Smithsonian Summer Showdown: Cast Your Vote for Space Shuttle Discovery

There's a contest going on, and the National Air and Space Museum needs your help to win!

The Smithsonian Summer Showdown pits objects in the institution's collections against one another for the title of favorite Smithsonian object. Your vote can help propel Space Shuttle Discovery to the top!

Consider this: Discovery is the champion of the space shuttle fleet, being the longest-serving orbiter — flying more missions, carrying more astronauts, and visiting the International Space Station more times than any of its sister ships. And don't forget how it dazzled thousands flying atop a 747 on its way to its permanent home, the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

Show us your support by voting for Space Shuttle Discovery in the Science category, then pick your favorites in three other categories. You might win a prize!

When you cast your vote for your favorites, you'll be entered to receive the grand prize — a package of items from the Smithsonian Store valued at $425 — AND you'll have a chance to win the Round One prize of a unique Smithsonian 3D print.

First round of voting ends at midnight EDT on August 4.

It's not because Discovery was lucky enough to make it into a museum, as opposed to Columbia and Challenger, that the orbiter should deserve as much credit. I found this "champion of the shuttle fleet" title, although statistically correct, disrespectful regarding the others.

I just got an email announcing the second round of voting, and Discovery has made it past the first round.

I've done my part to get her to the final round!

I just voted for my favorite orbiter, OV 103!

I don't think Champion in this instance is anything other than good PR for the contest. Go Discovery!

Ha. I have to be honest and admit I voted for the T-rex in that category!

Well, it seems that Bao Bao the giant panda cub beat Discovery to be the science category entrant in the final round.

So, my vote went for the Star Spangled Banner.

All times are CT (US)
