Anyone heard of Europa Report yet? I saw this movie two days ago. It's not Apollo 18 or Alien, I can tell you that. If you could call it a horror movie at all, it shows the horror of how space doesn't give a rat's backside about humans at all. It's a cold, unforgiving area of indifference. And humans plop down in the middle of it with not exactly happy results. The film has a very good look to it, but I didn't find the characters very compelling at all. It's also very short, less than 90 minutes. Wait until it comes out on video, there's really nothing about this film that merits a viewing on a big screen over a smaller one. While it's not a bad movie, for all the work that went into it (and there is a LOT of NASA cooperation noted in the credits), I just expected more... |

Thanks for the input... I've been looking forward to that one (I think I even mentioned it in another thread here), if for no other reason than it looked like an earnest attempt to portray spaceflight with a modicum of realism.Sorry it was a bit of a disappointment, but I appreciate the big screen/small screen feedback. I rarely see movies in the theater any more unless they look like the "big screen" is critical to the experience (Star Trek Into Darkness was my most recent.) io9 liked Europa Report a lot; I'll probably still check it out at home. |

I saw it over the weekend (it's out on iTunes and Amazon on Demand) and enjoyed it a lot. I definitely would not call it a horror movie - it's hard sci-fi. But unlike p51, I found the characters well-written and well-acted. Not to give anything away, but there is one spacewalk scene that is the best depiction I've yet seen in terms of feeling for the characters were something to go wrong. The producers certainly did go to great lengths to make it scientifically plausible (although it's still a science fiction film for sure.) I concur with io9 that it's the best hard sci-fi movie since 2001, and I definitely recommend it. As for whether or not to see it in a theater... I've found that the theater experience these days isn't as enjoyable as it used to be, with too many loud talkers, cell phones, and generally inconsiderate members of the audience - so I prefer watching things on a big TV screen at home anyway. Makes bathroom breaks much easier too. |

I just watched this. It reminded me a bit of Moon as far as the look of the production and feel of the movie. Some things really bothered me as far as the story. Not sure why a surface EVA would be done with one person. Overall, I enjoyed it. But, maybe they should have paid attention to the warning from 2010! |

Yeah, or how about the crew taking a VOTE on what they're going to do in a certain circumstance?I didn't get the vibe that this was a well-trained crew who had planned for the potential of several possible scenarios once they got there. Any of the Apollo crews would have reacted much better to the things that happen in the film. That's why I didn't find the characters compelling because I couldn't believe them as trained astronauts. All that said, it's a great looking production and they did a much better job depicting space flight in a realistic context than most recent films and TV shows. |

Haha! I thought immediately of "ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE" as well, when I saw the first trailer. Glad I'm not the only geek who remembers
