Bobby had kindly offered to help me with a few items at the ASF show. I had an email from Bobby's wife yesterday: Saturday morning we were all packed up and heading to the show when a truck ran a Red Light and struck our vehicle on the driver's side causing severe damage and severely hurting Bobby. I was just shaken up real bad. When they got him to the hospital and ran a Cat Scan etc., he was rushed to surgery with a fractured left hip, fractured eye orbital and a crushed thoracic vertebrae. Please join me in sending best wishes for a speedy recovery. |

What terrible news. A car accident when on vacation must be an even more stressful situation when not near family or local/familiar medical services, etc. Hoping he has a quick and speedy recovery. |

That is going to be a long recovery. Must have been a big truck to do that kind of damage. Let's hope it is a complete recovery at least. And I'll be praying for him as well. |

A few years back, Bobby was kind enough to have Jim Lovell complete an Apollo 8 item for me at the ASF show. I've never met him in person, and yet he went out of his way to help. Here's wishing you a Full and Speedy recovery! Thanks Bobby. |

In the spirit of the collectSPACE family I'll be attending Spacefest IV and if Bobby isn't and needs some stuff signed, I will gladly assist. Here I am whining about having to leave early after running out of money/CC snafus. All of that doesn't mean anything after reading this. Hope the recovery is going well.

I received a welcome update from Bobby's wife, Addie: I got your card and took it to the hospital along with a print out of all the collectSPACE members that are pulling for him. Even though he has had three major surgeries and is in a lot of pain. It is going to be a long recovery. When I showed him the print out of all the collectSPACE members and your card it brought tears to him as he did not realize how tight a community he had with his fellow collectors. He has been down listed from critical to stable condition and hopefully I will be able to bring him home in a couple of weeks. Our vehicle was totaled in the accident as they measured the other drivers skid marks and they concluded he struck us around 65 mph. Thank goodness it impacted on the cross beam and we were in a SUV. We both send our thanks and all the prayers sent our way as he really could use them. I will keep you posted Paul as his condition improves. |

An update from Bobby's wife: Bobby was doing a lot before Christmas and a couple of days before Christmas he was having a difficult time breathing and I contacted his doctor who performed the surgery and they said to get him to the ER ASAP and an ambulance rushed him back to the hospital. They did numerous tests on him. What happened was from all the surgeries he developed blood clots even with him being on a blood thinner medicine a small blood clot broke free and went to a lung. This is what I basically got from his doctor's and this set him back. The Good Lord was with him because these sometimes can be fatal. I will keep you posted the best I can as my hands are full. |

An update: not on Bobby's health as there has been radio silence since I requested the refund of the cash advance I made for the items he was taking to the show. I sent Bobby over $1500 to get some items signed at the show, never having met the guy, but trusting his reputation. My items were returned by his wife - eventually, but she has steadfastly refused to acknowledge any of my requests for the cash back (after nearly 18 months). This is despite the fact that she openly sold some of Bobby's collection directly here on cS and on eBay. Of course my request for funds based on her sales was ignored. Although I'm not a US citizen I am now reluctantly considering filing at the Small Claims Office in Lee County, Fla., as the only chance of any recovery — unless anyone has any better ideas! I guess this is a lesson in misplaced empathy on my side and absolute abuse of trust, if not theft, on the other. |

Wow! That's a sad, strange twist. That she is selling some of his collection makes me wonder about how Bobby is doing, if he is still with us at all.Sometimes you have to to what you have to do, pleasant or not. It's not a small amount of money and if you have documentation between you and Bobby about the money and what it was intended for, then I'd say you have a pretty fair case. Did you use Paypal? Maybe they have ways of getting you your money back. I wish you good luck. It's sad that Bobby's wife won't do what is fair. We tend to be trusting in this hobby and in life in general and sometimes that comes back to bite us. |

I am not making judgements. I do not know the gentleman in question and do not know his current circumstances though I wish him good health. I do know I have taken many items to shows for people, and had items taken to shows by others involving thousands of dollars in cash with out any sort of formal documentation between either parties (other than insuructions as to how the items should be signed) and it has always worked out. The space collecting community being relatively small compared to other hobbies — and at least based on my experience — has often been word of mouth and honour system. So when this happens and a collector may be out of pocket, it really does tarnish the trust within the hobby. I hope this is not the case and it is some sort of misunderstanding. |
