Note to readers: Updates to collectSPACE may be more sporadic at times or slower to post over the next few weeks. Thank you for your patience and understanding. On Sunday (Jan. 20), my mother, Sue H. Pearlman, passed away due to complications arising from brain cancer. She was 65.The idea for collectSPACE came during a visit to my mom’s in July 1999. She was the first to read every article posted on this site since then and served as its unofficial and (until now) uncredited copy editor. My mother was enthralled by space exploration from the day the space age began. She began my own passion for collecting space by gifting me as a child with the newspaper clippings she had saved from the Apollo 11 moon landing. Although it was much rarer an occasion than I would have liked (and now deeply regret), mom was able to join me on a few of the trips I made in support of this site (and my previous career), when some of you may have met her. Thanks to a colleague at NASA, she cheered from alongside the Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida when Atlantis returned from the space station Mir on the STS-84 mission in 1997. She attended the dinner at the 2005 UACC autograph show in New Jersey, where she sat with Walt and Dot Cunningham (an experience she said rivaled her only other astronaut encounter: the day she picked up the phone at home and found herself on the line with Buzz Aldrin, who had called looking for me). In 2009, she came to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala., to watch as I was inducted into the Space Camp Hall of Fame. It was her encouragement that led to my attending Space Camp six times as a child, and she was thrilled to see the Davidson Center for Space Exploration and its vertical Saturn V outdoor display. Most recently, she and my grandmother (who passed away on Nov. 11, two days after my mother first fell ill due to cancer) visited the space shuttle Enterprise at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. She was amazed by the size of the orbiter and said then that she hoped to visit the other shuttles at their museum homes. Although she never registered on this site as a member, she read these discussion boards with great interest. She shared how much she admired the knowledge, passion and enthusiasm expressed by this community. She may not have been a card-carrying cS’er, but she was one at heart. My mother had her master's degree in education, and taught students and other teachers before helping my father start his business in the early 1980s. When my dad passed away in 1991, she took over and ran the company, the third largest of its type in the world. A few years later, she returned to education, serving as a school principal and office manager before illness forced her to retire. There is so much more I could write about my mom, but the words really do not suffice. She was an amazing woman, one who I am already finding very difficult to face life without. |

Robert, please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your Mother. We are all in her debt for placing you on the path that led to collectSPACE. Please know she is at peace and will forever be proud of you.My mother passed away in 2004 a month after I submitted the final artwork for Exp 11. Like your mom, mine was my biggest supporter. She didn't live to see my art fly in space. I hope it brings you a measure of comfort to know she was able to share your success. Please know your family will be in our prayers. |

Robert,So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing as I didn't know she had been so ill. Let me extend my condolences for your tremendous loss (and for your Grandmother earlier) and to the rest of the Pearlman family. Like Sue, my Mom had always been a strong supporter of my "space" work since the very beginning, and needles to say, I miss and loved her dearly. The big "C" also took her life in 2003, along with Theresa's parents in that same terrible year for us. Our thoughts and prayers (both Theresa and myself) are with you during this difficult time. May God Bless you all. |

So sorry to read of your loss, Robert. Your mother left us way too soon, but her legacy carries on in you. I know that her life would have inspired many others in so many ways, and it's nice to know that through you she managed to meet and talk with some of her spaceflight heroes. Sincere condolences. |
