Any collectSPACE members in the Southeast United States and especially in the North Carolina area, please be on the lookout for some meteorites stolen from the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute. Here is a TV news report on the incident. The folks at PARI do a lot of good work and education, I know any help would be appreciated. |

The stolen meteorites have been recovered. Transylvania sheriff's officers have made an arrest in a Christmas Eve break-in at Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute, and investigators recovered most of the items stolen including rare meteorites.Charged Saturday night was Brian Thomas Koontz, 29, of Balsam Grove, Transylvania sheriff's Detective Wade Abram said. Investigators are searching for another man, Hendersonville resident Robin Morris Baldwin Jr., who is believed to have participated in the break-in at the science education facility near Rosman. ...the stolen items were found at a home occupied by one of the suspects, but Abram declined to say which one, citing the ongoing investigation. Investigators are cataloging the recovered items and on Sunday had not met with PARI officials to determine if anything was still missing, he said. But officers believe they have most of the meteorites and other property. |

If your Christmas Eve includes the burglary of a science education facility, it's possible that you've made some bad choices in your life.(There's a "Transylvania" in North Carolina?) |

The only rocks these guys should be getting for Christmas from here on out are lumps of coal (preferably smashed over their heads). But yes, I would say they planned this little adventure and likely have done similar things before. Christmas is typically a ripe time for break ins due to the perception of reduced security and no normal staff working during the holidays. |

A rudimentary Google search indicates this isn't the first time Brian Thomas Koontz has had a close encounter with local law enforcemnt. |
