Astronaut Hoot Gibson on Sunday (Sept. 20) took first flying the P-51D Mustang "Strega" in the Unlimited Breitling Gold at the 2015 National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada. Gibson completed the 8 laps (64.1845 miles) in 7 minutes and 52 seconds, averaging 489 miles per hour.
Robert "Hoot" Gibson officially wins Unlimited Gold Race in Strega with a fast lap of 503.51 mph.

Astronaut Curt Brown also raced, flying the FB 11 Sea Fury "Sawbones," coming in fourth.

Sweet!

It's about time. Congratulations to Hoot and his team.

Would like to have been there to see it. Maybe next year.

Followed the race online. Great job!

A few of us had a chance to discuss air racing with Hoot last year at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation event. Glad he had a chance to fly one of the top P-51s and pull off the win.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports about the race:
A new pilot took the gold on Sunday at the 52nd annual Reno National Championship Air Races, breaking a six-year winning streak for Steven Hinton Jr.

All Robert "Hoot" Gibson could think of as he jetted past Hinton was flying a clean race.

"It ain't over until it's over," Gibson said after winning the Breitling Unlimited Gold Championship. "So I didn't know I had him until I crossed the checkered flag and until I stopped on the ground and I heard them say it was a clean race."

"...I've been dreaming about this for 25 years or so, and I've been a fan of the air races since I was a little kid," Gibson said. "I can't believe, I can't believe, I won the Unlimited championship. What a thrill."

Outstanding, just outstanding.

I was also privileged to have discussed air racing at little at the ASF show, and am thrilled with his victory.
