Purdue Federal, Purdue Alumni Association Hosted Astronaut Card Launch Party
After months of planning and preparation, the countdown to a new credit card design that celebrates the contributions to space exploration made by Purdue University and its distinguished alumni has begun. Purdue Federal Credit Union (Purdue Federal) in partnership with the Purdue Alumni Association hosted an exclusive launch party on Wednesday, August 29, for the Purdue Alumni Association Visa Astronaut credit card endorsed by Purdue alumnus and "the last man on the moon" Gene Cernan.
"We're excited to showcase the academic success of Purdue University and its alumni," said Purdue Federal President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Falk. "Through this new credit card design, we are honoring the role Purdue alumni like Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan have played in space exploration."
The card design features Gene Cernan making his historic last walk on the moon. The credit card benefits include a fixed rate, no annual fee, no balance transfer or cash advance fees, and a free rewards program.
The astronaut card design will be available beginning September 1. Interested Purdue Federal members and non-members may stop by to get a card instantly inside any Purdue Federal branch, or call 765.497.3328 or 800.627.3328. Cards are subject to approval.
Purdue Federal Credit Union (Purdue Federal) was founded as Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union (PEFCU) on the Purdue University campus in 1969. In December 2010, PEFCU acquired Members United Federal Credit Union through a merger. At the time of merger, the credit union changed its name to Purdue Federal to better reflect its membership base, which includes students, faculty and staff, and communities where Purdue University and its regional campuses operate. Purdue Federal is a member-owned financial cooperative with more than 60,000 members nationwide and assets at more than $700 million.

The Journal and Courier reports that the Purdue Federal Credit Union is pulling its advertisements for this credit card out of respect for Neil Armstrong.
"We pulled ads at the first football game," Falk said. "It's unfortunate and ironic timing. We're not trying to jump on the bandwagon. But Neil would not say to stop the process."
Television and radio advertisements for the new credit card will be aired starting Sept. 8, said Darlene Beers, the credit union's marketing manager, the date of the second Purdue football game.
The new Visa credit card features a picture of Cernan walking on the moon and is expected to attract thousands of carriers. It will be available at any branch starting Saturday, has no annual fee and features a free rewards program.
"This is celebrating the academic side of Purdue, which more of us can relate to," Falk said.
