My California license plate, "ON MOON", was ripped off of my bumper, screws and all!

The police have been informed.

Now that is low down! I hate to think a true space fan could be behind this but why this plate?

Keep an eye out for space collectors/modelers who just might post pictures of the collections or space models inside their homes and if you look in the background you just might see your plate. Also space related swap meets/conventions. Who knows, maybe the low life thief just wanted to commit a crime using a vehicle and by chance needed a stolen plate and grabbed yours.

Do you belong to the Yahoo Group Space Modelers? If you would like, I will post this over there with a link to your post here.

I wish you the best of luck on this and hope the plate can be found and returned to you soon. What did the police tell you? Have you contacted the DMV?

James, I posted a link to your post here over at the Yahoo Group so the guys over there can keep an eye out for your plate and to pass the word on to others.

Report it lost right now. The plate is gone, forget about ever using it on your car again.

Being in California, this could easily be to mask another stolen vehicle.

This happened to me a few years ago, someone stole not only my (non-personalized) license plate, but they stole my alumni license plate frame as well, while it was sitting in a very busy Wal-Mart parking lot. Worse, the DMV didn't list my plate as stolen for some reason, so when it turned up weeks later on an abandoned stolen car, I had a sheriff deputy and highway patrolman come to my house and grill me for a few minutes to be sure I didn't have any connection to said stolen vehicle!

Thanks for your messages, it is frustrating. The police took a full report and the DMV will help me get a replacement, for $39., of course.

It might be kids who want it for their wall. I"ll pass on the Yahoo site as I'll be getting a new plate.

Disgraceful! Use studs and fastenings that are only accessible from the inside next time if you can?

Just hypothesizing, but it possibly could be some space-ignorant jerk who thought he was stealing a souvenir from an actual moon walker or astronaut in general. Just saying it crossed my mind.

It's possible, although I have had the "ON MOON" license plates for almost a year and no one ever asked me about "Space".

Good news! The Rancho Mirage, CA police returned my licence plate. It had been anonymously dropped off at the City Hall.

My guess is that some kid had it and the parents intervened.

EXCELLENT news. Did you get it replaced already? If so, you could hang your old one in your room (provided it hasn't been beat to heck).

James, so glad you got it back, I wouldn't have bet a penny you'd ever see it again, and I'm very happy to be wrong!

The only other time I knew of a guy who got a stolen plate back, it was ripped off a US registered SUV of a serviceman in Germany, the locals often buy and sell them for the 'cool' factor. I was walking through a small town in Holland and we saw his plate in the back window of a German-registered car, several weeks after it was stolen. We stood there and looked at it, and I asked, "What are you gonna do? The owner could be days getting back to this car?" He smiled, picked up a large rock and said, "You might want to look the other way so you can say you didn't see this..."

I'm still waiting for my replacement plate. I will put the "stolen" one up on my wall next to my Apollo 16 and 17 Rover artifacts.

LOL, was he a Marine by any chance? I have this image of Clint Eastwood in my head from the movie "Heartbreak Ridge" saying "He improvised, he adapted and he overcame"

Glad to hear the original plate remained in good shape James. So now you'll have a primary and a backup as it were.
