As I write this, the USAF Academy, alma mater of 38 astronauts who have combined to crew 104 space shuttle and ISS missions, has issued evacuation orders for most residential areas threatened by the spread of the Waldo Canyon fire.I spoke with my parents (just south of the Academy, near Garden of the Gods) this evening, and they said that while wind conditions had driven the fire north, they were unable to see anything near the USAFA campus other than smoke, fireglow, and emergency lights to the northwest of Interstate 25. Photo posted (thanks Robert) shows fire above Falcon Stadium. Dad said that at this point response forces are nowhere near gaining control of this fire, there is no end in sight. Please take a moment to pray for, or simply wish the best to those responding and struggling to limit what is all but certain to be a horribly destructive tragedy. Thank you. |

I have been praying. I found out the Flying W Ranch burned to the ground yesterday. Only reason I really took an interest is my namesake, a guy also named "Jay Chladek" works there as the restaurant manager. I never met him, but I hear he is a nice guy. Now the workers at that place are out of work and likely running for cover as their houses are likely in the path of the fire as well. Why can't Tropical storms hit Colorado (yes, I know why, but sometimes I wish I had Q powers from Trek so I could snap my fingers to get the TD over Florida to dump its rain on Colorado instead). |

Woke to the news that my parents have been evacuated from their summer rental and are now staying with former neighbors just north of C. Springs. Dad: "Guess we should have stayed in Arizona." |

Not the Flying W! Went as a 13 year old kid in scouts on my way to Philmont. First saw academy and decided wanted to go there. Many years later I brought my wife to the Flying W. Very sad to hear, but the good memories remain. |

I am sure the Flying W will be rebuilt. I understand they got the antiques and livestock out and buildings can always be reconstructed once the insurance claims go through. As long as none of the staff got hurt in the process. |
