Actor Andy Griffith, best known for his roles as as the wise sheriff in "The Andy Griffith Show" and the rumpled defense lawyer in "Matlock," died Tuesday (July 3). He was 86.
Griffith died about 7 a.m. at his coastal home, Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said in a statement.
"Mr. Griffith passed away this morning at his home peacefully and has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island," Doughtie told The Associated Press, reading from a family statement.
In addition to his many other roles, Griffith played Harry Broderick on "Salvage 1" about a junkman who builds a spaceship to salvage debris on the moon.

I've always been a huge fan of Andy Griffith since childhood watching The Andy Griffith Show and of course Salvage-1. Since he's a native of my state of North Carolina I feel a personal loss today. I live an hour from his hometown of Mt. Airy which Mayberry was based on. He loved his native state from one end to the other. If anyone's in the Mt. Airy neighborhood just stop by his old childhood eatery Snappy Lunch and have a porkchop sandwich in his honor. Rest in peace Andy.

I was a technical adviser on this (I built the Apollo moonbase). Andy Griffith really was a nice sweet guy. He showed up on his off day to support his co-stars. He always told his stories, once the director had to yell at him to be quiet. I will never forget him as Andy Taylor or Harry Broderick...

One of my regrets is I never saw Salvage One on TV. At the time my family was living in Okinawa, so we missed the pilot movie and the show's network run. And it has never been released on DVD either.
A few years ago, ther was a resin kit available of the Vulture, which was the spacecraft Andy's team flew to the ole moon. Pretty cool design actually.
I'll miss Andy's acting. And as another space connection, it is Andy's influence that got Ron Howard into pursuing directing and production as opposed to being just an actor. If it wasn't for that, we might not have gotten a film about Apollo 13, or any of the cool stuff that came after.
