The linked Metro News article takes Clarkson's comment out of context.

Reference the original article, which Metro News based its blurb, in South Africa's Sunday Times.

Clarkson said that, unlike other times when he met his childhood heroes and found them to be "wankers", he was relieved to discover that Scheckter was a "nice bloke".

"One of my childhood heroes was Chuck Yeager (the first pilot to break the sound barrier). When I finally got around to meeting him, I found he was the biggest wanker," Clarkson told the audience, to much laughter.

So Clarkson makes a joke in the process of delivering a compliment for the guest of honor, and that becomes worthy a headline?

Er, Yes!

How often have you heard Chuck Yeager being called a "wanker" in print?

I actually know a bit about that encounter. Yeager was being interviewed for Clarkson's "Speed" program. Clarkson was being a bit obnoxious with Yeager and Chuck didn't take too kindly to basically having the p*ss taken out of him (Clarkson made all the wrong noises, talked about the M.52 program and how Miles invented the flying tail plane) so obviously Yeager was annoyed with him so decided to be "off" with him. I heard that Yeager said afterwards that he wouldn't get in a p*ssing contest with Clarkson... and since that day Yeager has refused to give any more interviews to the BBC!

I think Chuck Yeager must be following Sir Alex Ferguson's example.

It seems Clarkson has upset nearly everyone at some point. But not as bad as Bart Sibrel.

All times are CT (US)
