Topic: "I Spy" at Downey and Edwards (1967)

One episode of "I Spy" featuring Robert Culp and Bill Cosby as the ever-so-cool secret agents Kelly Robinson and Alexander Scott was shot at North American facilities. Titled "Apollo," it was the 66th episode of the series and was originally aired 20 Nov 67. Curious if any of our California / NA vets or Aerospace Legacy folks remember this filming and can tell us more about it? 1967 would have been a tense year to admit a popular TV series crew into production & test areas. I wonder if really it was shot in '66, then not aired until late '67 once recovery from Apollo 1 was well underway? |

Thanks for posting that - I just watched it on Hulu and it was very interesting to see the Downey plant and the Apollo hardware being worked on. Bill Cosby makes a good tour guide!Did they film at Edwards? I didn't see that. The climax appeared to be at the dramatic Santa Susana rocket test site in Ventura County (which was also very interesting to see in its Apollo-Saturn test years). |

Francis, you're probably right on Santa Susana - as an east-coaster, I'm afraid one test stand in the desert looks like another  and Edwards pics from Alan Lawrie's book happened to be fresh in my mind.Also, on second viewing, I note Cosby emphasizing the CM hatch can be opened in "three seconds," - clearly indicating this being shot after Apollo 1. |

Here's what I found out here in Downey: A couple guys remember the one or two days filming here - but then they went to Santa Sue. They remember that Bill Cosby was cracking jokes. But that was 43 years ago... |

I was talking to a Downey Apollo checkout engineer this week and shared the episode link with him. He recalled the following:"I well remember the invasion by the production crew and acting personnel, and while my memory of it is not at all pretty or pleasant, I can handle and appreciate it so much better now, even a bit lighthearted …some 43 years later (if my memory serves me correctly)." |
