Which early astronauts (M/G/A) were Eagle Scouts, and who in this forum are Eagles?

I barely made it to Tenderfoot. Yeah, I was pretty pathetic as a Boy Scout!

Eagle from the 60's. One son is Eagle from 90's. I collect space, aviation, submarine, and Disney items. He has a masters in aerospace engineering and is training for duty on nuclear submarines. Go figure.

My Dad was a Scout Master (Troop 199), both my older brothers became Explorers. I rebelled and bailed out at age 15 and started chasing girls...

I went as high as Life. I still treasure the experience and have used the lessons learned constantly through life. My thanks to all who have donated their time to scouting.

My father was an Eagle scout and I was following the same path up until his death. Afterwards, I just couldn't find the spirit to continue.

I was never a scout as a kid but I have three boys in scouts and I am a leader both at pack level and district level. My youngest son is a Wolf and my other two are in boy scouts.

I am not (was a webelo) but my boys are 1st class scouts. They will be heading off to Philmont next year (2008) and I am thinking of going? Anyone been before? We might be hosting a Scouts in Space event to raise money for the trip.

I was not a Boy Scout, but my son is an Eagle. I made it to Philmont once (not for the regular program, but just for a couple days). Go if you have the opportunity, it is a beautiful place. I was an assistant Scoutmaster for > 10 years (not looking for pats on the back, I got plenty out of the program). Here's a hint for your sons; push them (within reason) to make Eagle by age 15, 16 at the latest before the girl bug really takes over their lives. I do recall teaching the Space merit badge. One of the best programs in the world, and when I retire (June 1, 2007!!!) I will once again get involved with the Boy Scouts.

Made it to first class - then we moved and we could not locate a troop. By the time we had found one, I had lost interest.

My father was an Eagle and I was on my way to follow in his footsteps when he passed away. As my connection to the scouts was through him, the desire to continue quickly faded. Somewhere inside a box in New Jersey are several albums full of badges and jamboree patches dating back to when my father was a boy through the events we attended together.

Was never a Girl Scout (they wouldn't want me; among other things, I cuss way too much) but my beloved is an Eagle Scout, so there's one not far from me.

I have very little knowledge about Scouting, so I'm hoping someone may be able to help a long-time friend. His son just completed his Eagle Scout project, and he would like to write to an astronaut (presumably someone closely associated with scouting) hoping for a reply letter to include in his Eagle Book. Anyone have any knowledge about this, and some names that I might provide?

Never quite made Eagle Scout although I did get to one level below that, Life Scout. I had a reoccurring problem with a required merit badge of Lifesaving. I was only an average swimmer and since there's only three months of summer here, I never developed further. Of course discovering girls didn't help with my progression either.

Rest assured that discovering girls kept more than one Scout from keeping the motivation up to go for Eagle.

Sort of regret it, though. I could have been the first one from my troop. A friend of mine later earned that distinction. Good for him, and good for all others who did so. I was, however, in the first group (2 of us) from my troop to make Order of the Arrow. (My father was OA, too.) I still treasure that above most other honors that I have received in my life. Great memories.

Can I ask what one has to do to become an Eagle Scout. I was a Scout in Australia for years and the term means nothing to me.

New scouts begin by earning rank; from Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, 1st Class, Star, Life, and then Eagle. Each rank has specific requirements (camping, leadership, merrit badges that must be earned, etc) but obviously the requirements become more stringent with each rank. To earn Eagle Scout an individual project is required; usually a community project (e.g. adding benches to a retirement home, honoring fallen police officers with a memorial, my son landscaped the yard at a house for homeless girls, etc, etc). Letters of reccomendation are also required. Plus with the higher ranks a board of review is required. These requirements may have changed a bit as I have not been active for a few years. Suffice it to say that earning the rank of Eagle Scout requires a lot of work and dedication. Plus there is a bit of a military style to the scouts (earning higher ranks, leadership, falling out into formation, forced marching, etc), so I think it's easy to see why so many of the astronauts were drawn to the scouts, and made Eagle.

I made it to Star scout. Then during a scouting jamboree, me and my buddy got kicked out for cherry bombing the Canadian scouts tent at night for not trading their brand new Canadian Maple Leaf flag for our U.S. flag.

Seemed like a good trade to me.

I would suggest that he focus his requests on shuttle-era astronauts who were scouts, some of whom are still in the program. Unfortunately, due to abuse of their generosity, many of the earlier astronauts have ceased responding to such requests.

Also, he can receive a congratulatory letter on behalf of all of NASA from the Administrator.

Thanks Mel for the very informative response. I have often wondered, now I shall wonder no more.

A scouting friend has asked me to find out if all the moonwalkers were Eagle Scouts - apparently he has heard that they were. Anyone know or can point me to an article for him?

For all you scouts, on February 13, 2010 at Kennedy Space Center, they will be hosting a Scout Day. Not sure as to the special guest but it will include activities and other stuff.
