As a piece of trivia - the most popular launch month in the US manned space programme is November with 18 (soon to be 19 if the Shuttle goes on time).

The least popular are the months of February and August with just 10 each.

Just last night I was looking at my KSC calendar and noticed the many launches, but it lists 17 missions, not 18, as flown. Which one is the calendar missing?

STS-66
STS-51A
Gemini 12
STS-5
STS-2
STS-74
Apollo 12
STS-38
Skylab 4
STS-80
STS-87
STS-33
STS-113
STS-44
STS-61B
STS-9
STS-97

The date explains it. The calendar was already on sale when 126 flew! Thanks!

Some more launch date trivia -
  • Half the Mercury launches (3) took place in the same month - May.

  • March, June and December were the most popular launch months for Gemini with 2 each.

  • July was the most popular launch month for Apollo (including Skylab and ASTP) with 4 launches.

  • July is the only month which has seen a launch of all the US manned flight programmes.

  • Until the Shuttle January (1 Apollo), February (1 Mercury), August (1 Gemini) and September (1 Gemini) were the least popular launch months with only one each.

As an aside, what are the most/least popular days of the week for launches and returns to Earth?

Most popular: Thursday with 32 shuttle launches.

Least Popular: Saturday with 9 launches.

Others:

  • Monday 16 (including STS-129)
  • Tuesday 15
  • Wednesday 17
  • Friday 29
  • Sunday 11
(Although you'll have to take into account the launch time which may impact the launch day - don't know which ones I've used, UT, EST/EDT).

Even more launch trivia -

Five Apollo flights landed in a different month from which they were launched. One even landed in a different year - the only one to date.

38 shuttle flights have done the same - landed in a different month.

  • I remember when Thursday seemed to be THE day for shuttle launches and thought the number would have been higher than 32. Then I thought about scrubs. Anyone know how many of the Friday launches took place because of Thursday scrubs?

    All times are CT (US)
