In celebration of the upcoming 40th anniversary of humans setting foot on the moon, hackers placed a 1/2 scale replica of the Apollo Lunar Module on [MIT's] Great Dome.

Shortly after the Apollo lander appeared, hackers also installed a large statue of Athena in Killian Court.

I think this is my favorite "hack" at MIT. I'll confess that I had to look up the term in reference to MIT - like so many people I know, I automatically assumed (I know - that's a BAD word!) that hacking was a bad computer problem. I enjoyed the definition on the MIT Gallery of Hacks webpage:
The word hack at MIT usually refers to a clever, benign, and "ethical" prank or practical joke, which is both challenging for the perpetrators and amusing to the MIT community (and sometimes even the rest of the world!). Note that this has nothing to do with computer (or phone) hacking (which we call "cracking").
It would be really cool if they were able to keep the LM there until after the anniversary of the first lunar landing.

I can see the dome from my office window, and it appears that the LM it is no longer there.

Great, there have been larger things up there, ranging from cars to Fire trucks

I'm keeping my eye on the dome, if they put up anything else as we get closer to the anniversary, I'll post.

The real Apollo 11 lunar module crew recently visited the replica of Eagle:
It was an iconic moment: On Wednesday, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin ScD '63, the first two human beings ever to have left their footprints on another world, stood on the lawn in front of Kresge auditorium in a rare side-by-side appearance. They were posing in front of MIT's most recent student hack - a reproduction of the lunar module that had carried the two men to the surface of the moon 40 years ago next month.

If anyone has any clout with MIT, it would be great to get that photo of Neil and Buzz in a higher resolution...
