I made a post on this message board last week, seeking an Apollo 12 patch...

As a full-time freelance writer, I have the incredible opportunity to work on a story in which I attend several of the stock-car racing schools. I've already driven at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, and a week from today, on Jan. 20, I've got the dream chance to drive at Talladega... the longest and fastest track in the sport.

After that, I've got sessions lined up with a private coach at the famed Hickory Motor Speedway, as well as the Richard Petty and Jeff Gordon schools.

What I'd like to do is this... would there be anyone on this board who has a spare Apollo 12 patch that they could get me by Friday, Jan. 18? I've got a driver's uniform, and I'd like to wear the patch on my uniform in honor of my favorite flight crew.

Within minutes, however, I'd discovered one here at the house that I had stashed away.

However, Gary Milgrom, the COO of the company that makes the HANS (head and neck support) device for racing, is a space buff as well. He saw the post and offered me the use of a $1,300 piece of equipment.

I thought I might pass along this photo of me taken January 20 at Talladega, with the Apollo 12 patch on my uniform, a NASA decal on my helmet and the HANS device that Gary passed my way.

By the way, I had 20 laps on the track driving a car prepared by Dale Jarrett Racing Adventures. Talladega is 2.66 miles in length and the biggest track in NASCAR. My best lap was more than 165 mph, with a top speed at the end of the back straightaway of 177.78 mph.

It was an incredibly humbling experience, given that the fastest lap during the last race at Talladega was turned at more than 196 mph.

All times are CT (US)
