Thanks for the wishes for a great day. I hope the other Veterans enjoyed their day too. I am a veteran and even though I had to work on Veterans day I was able to enjoy the evening.

I took my daughter to a Kansas Jayhawks basketball game. Humboldt, KS is a small town of 1,800 people but one of our own made the Jayhawks basketball team this year.

KU basketball tickets are hard to find so if anyone knows of any please contact me.

I also worked on Veterans Day. I am not a veteran, but my father was killed in Normandy on July 10, 1944.

As I walked to work, I crossed Fifth Avenue in New York City with the other pedestrians just as the Veterans Day Parade came to a halt to allow traffic in 47th Street. I usually wear a lapel pin flag on such occasions, but I had forgotten it at home. I felt out of place without it. As the parade came to a halt, the cheering increased as the spectators declared their appreciation to the marchers, now at "Parade Rest!"

From my nearby office I could still hear the military bands and the cheering crowd. I am very appreciative of the sacrifices that all veterans have made to assure our freedom.

Bill's comment about a lapel pin reminded me of something. Does anyone remember vets selling little red paper poppy flower lapel pins to wear on Veteran's Day? My dad used to buy them and we would wear them when I was a kid. But the tradition seems to have died here and I had forgotten all about it. Last year a coworker from England wore one. I thought it would be great to revive the tradition here.

I remember buying and wearing a Poppy on Veterans Day, as recalled in the following article:

While I don't remember seeing them this year I purchase them every year. The set up outside the local Wal Marts and sell them.
