Hi,

In about ten days time I'm going abroad for a few months, and letting out our house while we're gone. As a consequence I have to -

a) find somewhere to store my collection of spacesuit parts
b) insure them in this location

Does anyone have experience of this sort of problem? I'm particularly keen to hear from anyone who's found appropriate insurance of this sort.

Cheers,
Matt

I don't have any experience on this subject, but I would be happy to look over your collection for you.

Hi Matt,

I have a special insurance from Hiscox - a UK insurance company.

I believe (no garantuee)they automatically insure your stuff if it's temporarily at another location (if you tell them). I don't know if there's a time limit to this however.

At least worth checking with them : www.hiscox.co.uk

best regards
Florian

Matt,

Have you thought of hiring space in one of these self storage centres. They provide secure storage for all kinds of personal possessions and I assume are covered by insurance for loss.

Steve has the right idea, you have to pay per month and they do insure your items and also they have CCTV or at least the one i used did have.

I've had the expensive items in a bank vault for many years now - taking out only for exhibitions, talks etc. You pay for the safe deposit box and,if I recall, its insured upto a certain amount (not necessarily the actual value) by the bank.

The bank are not involved in what you actually put into box/es though I think they appreciate a hint. I don't suppose they would want bank robbers explosives in it!

Your space suits should fit into a box if folded carefully - though they can be awkward to fold because of valve ports etc.

Otherwise like earlier try a secure storage - mshould be Ok for a month or so.

Alternatively try local museum MAy be willing to park it for you in their vaults?

Quite frankly, I would not trust any of the items to Self Storage...to great an opportunity for loss, or damage due to humidity or temperature change.

I would kindly ask your friends if they could open up their homes to keep your items for a short time, until you could come back and retrieve them ( if this is an option )'cause they're way too valuable to be left in the hands of strangers.

Just leave the wife at home and take your collection with you.

All times are CT (US)
