That's part of a full-length portrait of Carpenter painted by Raymond Everett Kinstler, commissioned by the USN. I think it hangs in the Navy Museum in Anacostia, Washington, DC. This was one of Kinstler's first important commissions (he painted the Navy's official Shepard portrait too) and and since gone on to society and government (senators, first ladies, and presidential) portraits. |

Kinstler is an inspiration to all of us artistically inclined. Of course the DP was an inspiration to Kinstlers muse as well.

Ed, if you're interested in Kinstler's body of work, he wrote a book (hope the link works)
http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cfm called Painting Portraits. For one of the editions, the front of the dust cover is devoted to Kinstler's full-length portrait of Tom Wolfe, resplendent in his all-white regalia. And just last week, Kinstler was in the news because Senator Bob Dole's U.S. Senate painting was unveiled. Kinstler painted it. |

 I admit I was pretty pleased with this painting in 1991, and so was John Glenn when I gave it to him in 1999. But when I see Kinstler's work I realize I don't even come close. On the one hand that is a sobering thought, on the other it is inspiring. I think one of my next works will be a portrait! Thanks again, Kris. Ed |

Carmelo- I haven't seen any of your other work, but this one is amazing. The detail is great and I hope to see more.Ed- Your John Glenn has amazing detail too. Especially with the launch pad and rocket. It almost looks like a regular High Quality photo of John Glenn! |

An update on Kinstler, which may interest collectors of comic books. Everett Raymond Kinstler began his art career after dropping out of high school back in the 40s and illustrating comic books! Hawkman was his and Captain Marvel too, I think. Kinstler just addressed a huge comic book convention in Montana, a group that was shocked to learn that the famed illustrator (and now portrait artist of presidents!) was still alive. |
