The show has just begun, and Dan is in a 4 person tribe with 3 other older men..against 3 other tribes consisting of Older Women, Younger Men and Younger Women. Dan's tribe was the first to find the initial "prize", and won a reward of flint to make fire. Dan has already made an alliance with another tribe member, Terry..He told Terry " I won't ever lie to you..and I expect that you won't lie to me.." They then told each other what they do in real life..Terry is a retired F-14 fighter pilot who flies for American Airlines.. Apparently the Survivor cast was told that Dan used to work for NASA..but that's all... Dan told Terry, "I used to work for NASA..and I didn't just WORK on the Shuttle..I flew on the Shuttle!" .. The first immunity challenge is coming up next.... A physical and mental challenge. 3 teams will win immunity.... Dan's tribe is second thru the physical part of the challenge behind the younger women....Dan finds the clue and they start the mental challenge..they win immunity!! He'll be around 'till next week!!

I was surprised how much the young men team doesn't really have their act together compared to the other 3 groups. Their shelter looked thrown together in 10 minutes! It may be interesting to see if there is a blame game when they realize they have no decent shelter from the rain. One of the fellas on Barry's team is undergoing nicotine withdrawal. He may gain the most from the experience. Looking forward to the next episode!

Here is the update I wrote for Space.com:
quote:
Retired Astronaut "Survives" First Week on Reality TV Show

(Warning: the following Astronote includes spoilers.)

"Exile Island", the 12th and latest entry in CBS's "Survivor" reality TV series debuted Thursday night with retired three time space shuttle astronaut Dan Barry among the castaways.

Separated into gender and age grouped teams, Barry's older men "La Mina" camp got off to a strong start, finishing the first challenge before the other three "young women," "older women" and "younger men" tribes of four people each.

Between the initial contest that began the show and Survivor's trademark "immunity challenge", which decides which group would have to vote someone "off the island", Barry and fellow La Mina castaway Terry Deitz bonded as Dan shared he was an astronaut with the former F-14 turned American Airlines pilot. Barry's space flight experiences - including flying twice to the International Space Station - are a secret to the other 14 castaways.

The older men ended the episode by coming in second, which earned their immunity, leaving Barry to "outwit, outplay and outlast" until next week's show.

I don't watch "Survivor" but could I just play Devil's Advocate here for a moment and remind our American cousins that this show is delayed viewing in Australia and other countries, and as such I'm sure regular viewers overseas would prefer not to get these revealing updates on the show. As I say, I don't watch it anyway, but it hasn't begun screening here and maybe it might be worth while soliciting the opinions of some overseas viewers about these potentially "spoiler" updates.

On our front page entry that links to this thread (and in the above excerpt from Space.com) we preceded the text with a spoiler warning (or label). It might be good for those who start threads like this one to add the same to your subject line. I don't want to have too many threads devoted to this, so perhaps this one can remain for the discussion of the show with spoilers and another (as deemed desired) can be started for those who want to talk about it without sharing what happened.

That said, I can't promise that when Barry either wins or loses, that it will stay hidden for long. We already have some plans in the works depending on the outcome...

For those without access to Survivor on TV, CBS.com is offering episodes of the current season for download at $1.99 each.

Robert,
I was going to post an update every week until Dan is off the show..or do you want to continue to do so?? Although redundency is nice in Spacecraft systems..I believe two separate postings on each episode is too much for even the most die-hard Dan Barry "Survivor" fan to endure.

Here's what I don't understand. The 'you don't lie to me and I won't lie to you' thing has been nothing but a losing strategy. Especially if anyone is stupid enough to believe it. The game is nothing BUT lying. And lying long enough to get you far enough. I love the look that surivivors get when they have been 'betrayed' by a 'friend'. For Pete's sake! Are you there to win a million dollars or are you there to make an episode of Oprah??
