Domino's Pizza release
One Small Pizza for Man, One Giant Pizza with Extra Cheese for Mankind

The scene aboard the space shuttle Discovery must have been like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster. "Houston, we have a problem. Our supply of Domino's Pizza is depleted. I repeat, all Domino's Pizza is gone. Do you copy?"

Domino's Pizza copied loud and clear. When astronauts aboard the space shuttle Discovery told The Today Show the one thing they missed most from Mother Earth was pizza, team members from Domino's Pizza, the world recognized leader in pizza delivery, pondered the idea of becoming the galactically-recognized leader in pizza delivery.

"Domino's Pizza wants to figure out a way to deliver pizzas to our brave astronauts aboard the shuttle Discovery," said Holly Ryan, Domino's Pizza spokesperson.

Domino's Pizza is quite aware of the difficulty of delivering pizzas to outer space, so "Plan Beta" involves Domino's Pizza offering to cater a "welcome home" pizza party for the astronauts at the conclusion of their mission.

"While we are the best at pizza delivery, our delivery vehicles aren't yet capable of breaking the earth's gravitational pull," adds Ryan. "That's where NASA comes in. If they'll let us borrow a shuttle, we'll deliver to space. If not, Domino's can deliver to the Discovery's shuttle bay door upon their touchdown."

Talk about shameless self-promotion! The astronauts made no mention of Domino's pizzas specifically but somehow they have turned it into a news item about Domino's.

And all this without actually doing anything! All Domino's did was say we would deliver to space if we could. The local pizza place on the corner of my street could say the same thing.

You have to hand it to Domino's though, they didn't miss this chance for free advertising. I'll bet Pizza Hut et al are cursing their PR departments for not making the same announcement first.

I thought this was rather neat on Domino's part, in the spirit of the Taco Bell floating Mir target and the Long John Silver's jumbo shrimp on Mars.

Pizza Hut previously flew a personal pan pie to the International Space Station but Domino's offering to cater a pizza party for the crew really emphasizes the desire for a celebration.

I don't think NASA would allow them to accept the offer for obvious reasons, but wouldn't it be cool if they did? Hold it at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center, invite the public, offer all the pizza they can eat and celebrate a fantastic mission now safely home!

I found this particularly amusing because the last episode of the comedy show Robot Chicken had a sketch where the Space Station crew was prankcalling pizza places, getting them to promise delivery in 30 minutes of less before giving the "address."

Which makes me think of something the Gene Cernan said — that NASA could raise money by selling advertising on the outside of the ISS (The Domino's Science Module, or the like) much like they do on the Goodyear Blimp.

And Domino's pizza just <sarcasm> tastes so good on earth </sarcasm> I'm sure that it will taste equally as yummy in zero g.

Good for a chuckle, though.
