Hi,

I'm trying to pay Swann for recent purchases and having endless trouble as they don't take credit card payments. Could any other UK members who've paid them let me know what method they used?

I tried a Bidpay money order, but they can't be sent to companies only individuals. I tried wire transfer but HSBC insist they need a 'swift code' for the bank they're paying into, and Swann say they don't use swift codes in the US.

Any thoughts / successful methods anyone can recommend? Ideally something I can do online or the phone; I'm currently fighting off the end of a bout of mild pneumonia so a trip to my bank branch is probably a few days off.

Cheers,
Matt

I cannot understand why you are having difficulty transferring funds to Swann's bank account in the US. All you need is the bank's name and address and their ABA (American Banking Assn.) number. This is the number that is assigned to every bank in the US. It is a 9-digit number and appears on all of the bank's checks and deposit slips. You also need Swann's address and their bank account number.

This is a common practice and you should have no difficulty. Swann should fax the instructions to you. []

What about a Bank Draft? You pay in Sterling, the Draft is in dollars, and can only be cashed by the payee. You'll pay a fee for it (maybe £12 - £15) but it's a reasonably safe way to transfer funds.

Swann are wrong. SWIFT is international, but they might know it as a "BIC" code. If you have the name of the bank and it's location HSBC should be able to look it up, or try here: http://www.swift.com/biconline/

Nice one Paul, that site's a keeper. Thanks to everyone for suggestions on and off-line

I finally had to go into the local branch in person yesterday, where they had no problem arranging a wire transfer with the same details that that the phone-banking staff had insisted were insufficient.

Roll on the unified world currency I say.

Cheers,
Matt
