Just noticed that US-cyclist Lance Armstrong is become very popular in the US, especially Texas as our national news stated today ...
Question to collectSpace memebers;
Which Sport(s) do You practice ?

I'm a long-distance runner and like (mountain-)biking as well ...

Baseball, as most pro athletes will say, it's the hardest thing to do, hitting a round ball with a round bat, with the ball doing 90+ miles an hour, not to mention curveballs, sliders...

I'll try anything once - wanted to parasail when I was on vacation this past May but didn't have the money....

I bowl on a regular basis. I already have strange looks from my co-workers when I mention I work partial overnights (e.g., 18.00-02.00) on a Saturday and then get up to go bowling at 09.00 on a Sunday because that's when it's cheaper.

I'm learning to fly. I went SCUBA diving once. I also like to play badminton but haven't done so in way too long.

Almost anything in and on the water. I used to do competitive swimming, sometimes some sailing. Right now I don't practice any sport at all. (unless you consider travelling to events with the purpose to hunt astronauts' autographs a sport ... )

I always liked Walt Cunningham's description of Neil Armstrong from The All American Boys :
"He was one of the least athletic of the astronauts; if he felt the urge to exercise he'd lie down until it went away."

That about sums up my own sportiness, although I do like to snorkel and dive when the opportunity arises.

I read somewhere that Neil once quoted a saying by Beardsley Ruml, the postwar director of the NY Federal Reserve Bank,"If you ever hear of me dropping dead on the tennis court, you'll know I was crossing it to get another scotch and soda."

Armchair Formula 1 and armchair football (soccer). Though in my youth I was a pretty useful goalkeeper and a keen snooker player...

Walking and occasional swimming, when the weather is good enough, which in these parts is sadly not very often! I used to cross-country ski, but my niece and nephew have the skis these days! I'd like to take up rollerblading if and when I can get the money together for all the gear...I loved to rollerskate as a kid, being the child of the 70's/80's that I am! -C

Skiing (Alpine and Nordic), bicycling (mountain and road), hiking, and getting back a little bit into tennis. Played soccer up until about a year ago, but probably done with the game now. I've loved a lot of sports for several decades, and who knows what comes next? Play or die.

I play slow pitch softball (I just can't hit fastballs any more), golf (badly), and rock climb. I also coach high school baseball. I just don't like any games with a time limit.

Riding my bike. Everywhere, anytime. Commuting with it, winter or summer. Will favor a violin-only gig over a cello-and-violin gig (I play both) if I can get there riding instead of driving, even though I may be waving some extra fee.

Those who met me while on tour with Cirque du Soleil will remember the bike rack with bike always on my vehicule.

PS I don't ride any special bike, just old but fine rigs which I procure in used sports goods shops and tailor to my needs -- and replace often due to early wear!

Brenda - I have a lot more to worry about than business jets!

The airport I fly out of - as part of my volunteer work for search and rescue - is within the 10 mile zone of a nuclear power plant, and within 20 miles of three military bases, one of which handles large (C-141 and soon, C-17) military transports and tankers (KC-10, KC-135), and the occasional Vice President of the United States.

The only thing I have to say is thank God I'm not down in Atlantic City, because then I'd have to contend with both commercial traffic and F-16 fighters doing Homeland Security patrols.

In the late eights I did a few parachute jumps but stopped.

Now I lawn bowl (Yes I'm only 33 but it always fun to win against one of the 60+ members)

Have just taken up rowing, As a company we sponsored an event that put a 4 person crew together with no rowing experience with an experienced cox. Our crew lost the QTR final by 1/4 of a boat length but we are keeping this up rowing most Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Other than that I joined a Gym about 3 months ago and have lost a stone but still have a long way to go to get fit, Still hovering around the 15st mark (Don't you feel sorry for the guys in the boat )

But I understand Armstrongs feelings about exercise

Hart- thanks for the interesting aircraft info-did not realise-all the best with your S AND R Volunter work, take care, wish I could join you? VERY EXCITING. I have friends who do the same -as you- is it a lynx chopper?Very worth while work, I have seen a few planes crashes into the Irish Sea
around my local airport, and have helped out with the AIR ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION BRANCH on numerous occasions, found this rewarding., in a sad kind of way.
Good Luck, regards

ps have you seen this island on a map?

I played football for 6yrs ( not very good).I didn't take up Cricket till I was 15 and played till I was 37, I was an average allrounder playing in the local leagues in the Midlands. I had to pack it up through injury around 4 1/2 yrs ago.
Since packing cricket up I've took up crown green bowls ( I wish I'd listen to my physic teacher at school) Like Ian H its nice to win against an old boy who got 50+ yrs of bowling under his belt.
I'm a Armchair motor racing fan( F1 is well out my price range to what it used to be when I used to go in the 80's),I also go and watch Rugby league at Wakfield (Trinity), and finaly LOADS of walking (a bit of a busmans holiday with that one).
all the best

Glad there is someone else that understands my cry for help.

I took my girlfriend up for a flight when I first met her. She wasn't too excited about it, but once I handed the controls over to her, I created another addict. She is now my newest pilot student!

running (hope to knock off a second amrathon this year), volleyball and coach soccer.

Wish I had the time to learn to fly, but I have promised my daughter that she can start taking lessons in three years when she turns 14.

I picked this one up late so sorry for joining in.
I use to play rugby for many years to a fairly high level but had to retire from the game at 34 due to increasing injuries. You can only dislocate your knee so many times before it becomes boring! I now go rowing and cycling...low impact.
