I offer this fascinating story from the London "Sunday Times" of 19th March, 1972:

"Neil Armstrong, first astronaut to walk on the Moon in July, 1969, set foot yesterday on the Scottish earth of his thieving forebears to receive the freedom of Langholm, in Dumfriesshire. More than 2,400 turned out to welcome the descendant of the notorious family of border raiders, one of whose chiefs, Johnnie Armstrong, was hanged by King James V in 1529. Commented Neil: 'I'm sure my ancestors have been dreadfully misreprented.'

I wonder whether this will find its way into the Armstrong biography which is currently being written?
