I am planning on assembling a 1/72 scale model of the shuttle orbiter. And, I want to scratch build the SRBs and main engine fuel tank in order to have a complete 1/72 shuttle poised for launch. Does anyone have any experience scratch building these accesories? Are there any common items that can be used? (PVC pipe, cardboard tube, etc.) Any tips or information including dimensions would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first attempt at something like this.

I don't scratch build usually, but Revell-Monogram as you might know made a 1/72 stack kit. It needs some work for accuracy but nothing major. You can search ebay for that kit, goes for around $30-50.

Glen Johnson (www.realspacemodels.com) makes accurate main engines for 1/72 and 1/144 scales and an accurate 1/72 cargo bay.

You also might want to purchase Mike Mackowski's Space In Miniature book on the Shuttle. http://www.inficad.com/~mjmackowski/books/sim3.html

It's not going to be an easy undertaking, but it's doable. Mike's book will help a lot.
