Does anyone know the history behind the development of the Saturn V engines? For example, there were the F-1 main engines on the first stage and the J-2 engine of the Saturn IVB stage.

Here is what I know so far — Rocketdyne built a test engine, the E-1 and then went on to develop the F-1 engine followed by the J series of engines. Is anyone familiar with the A through D series of engines and which launch vehicles those were developed for? In addition, there must have been an "H" and "I" engine series as well.

H-1 powered the Saturn I and IB first stage.

I is usually skipped because it is confused with 1 (one). The Redstone rocket used the A-7 engine.
