I have often heard that most of the lunar samples have still not been examined by scientists — can anyone confirm (or deny) that? |

The percentage differs depending on the source (figures range from 75 to 90 percent), but yes, most of the Apollo samples remain untouched in isolated storage for posterity. Quoting the Lunar Sample Compendium (2012): Between 1969 and 1972, twelve men walked on the surface of the moon and carefully collected 2,196 documented samples of soils and rocks during about 80 hours of exploration. Altogether this collection of samples weighs 382 kilograms. ... In general, the largest portion of each sample remains available for future studies, although some important samples are nearly exhausted. According to NASA, "nearly 400 samples are distributed each year for research and teaching projects" (samples, in this use, refers to subsections of the 2,200 samples returned from the moon). | |
