I have been watching the Apollo 12 Spacecraft Films DVDs and during the recovery segments, they show two Mobile Quarantine Facilitates being loaded onto the USS Hornet.

Did they have a second for a backup or what? I know four were built, but never knew that they carried two on board the carriers.

I had a brief look in the book "Splashdown" by Don Blair and it mentions on page 249 (paperback) that on Apollo 11 recovery the USS Hornet carried two Mobile Quarantine Facilities, end to end in the hanger in case one malfunctioned in some way.

As an aside I would heartily recommend both Don Blair's book And "Hornet plus Three" by Bob Fish which both describe Apollo recovery operations an area often overlooked in a warm enjoyable manner.

You can see the second MQF in the background in Apollo 12 photo S69-22876.

On the network coverage of the Apollo 11 recovery, the backup MQF is very much visible as President Nixon and his party walk to/from the welcome-home ceremony.

On books about splashdown and recovery, Bob Fish's Hornet Plus Three is an absolute must - well-illustrated and very nicely researched. Don Blair's Splashdown has some great stories and some pictures you won't find elsewhere, but it's best viewed as a book of reminiscences; there are some factual errors, it really needs editing help, and in some places it's clear his research didn't take him where he needed to go. OTOH, his personal recollections as the Mutual Radio correspondent on several recovery deployments are very entertaining.

If you really want to get technical and detailed, Scott Carmichael's Moon Men Return is well worth a read. Mostly text and only a small number of pictures, but there's a ton of information in there.
