I'm not sure what the object is in your pic. However a boom was used to retrieve film from the ATM during EVAs.

The televised jettison was of the faulty S073 Experiment boom arm.

This occured on DOY-216 and was carried out by the SL-3 crew of Bean, Lousma, Garriott.

Thanks for that information.

NASA SP-404 Skylab's Astronomy and Space Sciences has a preflight photo of the S073 Gegenschein-Zodiacal Light Experiment boom on page 38, and an onboard photo of the experiment location on page 39.

No problem. The TV goes for around 6 minutes and you see the boom floating off towards the earth. The crew give a running commentary all the while during the TV coverage.

All times are CT (US)
