Does anyone know what the circular port below the command module hatch on the right side (above and to the right of the aft pitch engines) was? I cannot find any reference for it. |

Do you have an image of the area you are referring to? Are you looking at around the hatch area, or on the right hand side on the module when facing the hatch? |

If you draw a line parallel to the entire right side of the hatch and extend it down to the heat shield, the port in question is about in the midway between the bottom of the hatch and the heat shield. |

The cabin ventilation port, designed to vent cabin pressure between the cabin and ambient atmospheric pressure. This is a different vent port from the one installed in the unified hatch design, which was installed for the crew to be able to rapidly vent cabin pressure in an emergency. The cabin ventilation port was located in this position so that it remained above the waterline while the command module was in either the stable 1 (apex up) or stable 2 (apex down) orientation, the third image on this page shows the stable 2 orientation and how the vent port is above the waterline. This port is used to vent cabin air pressure during launch ascent until the internal cabin pressure decreases to operational pressure, and during descent to balance ambient atmospheric pressure with cabin pressure. |

Different system (located opposite side of spacecraft at the +Z axis behind the MDC and forward compartment). This port equalized pressure in the aft compartment. |

From the Command/Service Module Systems Handbook, here is a scan of CSM-LM External Component Locations, Figure 11.2. I believe item #77 - Air Vent, might be the component you are referring to. |
