A friend of mine who worked for GE and was assigned to Project Apollo at MSC-Houston in the '60s gave to me a notebook full of NAA-Rockwell memos from the 1967-68 time frame. Much of it deals with electromagnetic interference anomalies during tests of various spacecraft (i.e., BP-14, LTA-8, S/C 101, etc). However, one interesting memo was in regard to LES-012, the launch escape system for the Apollo 1 spacecraft (S/C 012). It authorized its refurbishment and reallocation to the "Block II CSM program." Does anyone know what the final disposition was for this particular LES? To my knowledge, it was never flown. I always suspected it was stored with the Apollo 1 CM components at Langley or was scrapped. On a related note, I seem to recall SM-012 was stored at NAA-Downey until the early '70s at which point it was scrapped. |

If NASA went to the expense of refurbishing it, I wonder why it was not reused. | |
