I recently learned that the three returning Skylab crews all landed fairly close to the continental US just southwest of San Diego. Could other Apollo missions have landed there as well? I would have thought this would be advantageous to the logistics of crew recovery operations.

Here's the Wikipedia page listing all U.S. splashdown locations.

Here's a Google map showing the U.S. manned splashdown locations.

At least one problem, especially returning from the moon, if you overshoot you come down on land instead of water. The Apollo CM didn't have landing air bags or breaking rockets to cushion a ground landing, just collapsible couches.

All times are CT (US)
