Every picture Ive seen of Ron Evans during his deep space EVA to retrieve the film magazines from the SIM bay show him floating along the service module with seemingly no hand or foot restraints. Based on the difficulty of EVAs on Gemini as described by Gordon, Cernan, et al, how did the Apollo 15, 16 and 17 command module pilots manage their deep space spacewalks without foot holds/restraints? Or are they just not visible in the photos I've seen? Does anyone know if there are photos showing the hand/foot holds? |

In "Falling To Earth," Al Worden describes not only what you are looking for, but the training that went into deciding what the spacewalkers would need in terms of equipment and assistance.I've not heard any indications TK will ever write anything, and Ron of course passed away a long time ago, with his published talks only brushing lightly on this subject. |

There's plenty of photos and even video of Evans using hand rails to move about during his spacewalk. Scroll down this page for photos of the EVA and YouTube for the video. |

Also, check out this photo of Stu Roosa training as backup CMP for Apollo 17. He's clearly using the hand rail.I was really curious about the images you describe. A Google search reveals various images of him floating (Check out Evans training in the pool!), but still holding onto to something, though it's a bit dark to see at times. If you have a link to a specific the image(s) you describe, I'd love to see it. |

Thank you. If you look at the first two of those three photos is doesn't look like he is holding onto anything - just floating. I can see a small hand rail in the last picture but I was under the impression from the Gemini experiences that in order for a astronaut to effectively be able to work in weightlessness they need both hand and footholds. I don't see any footholds or similar restraints. |

NASA photo S71-02250 is a pre-launch image that shows an EVA foot restraint in the Apollo 15 SIM bay. Apollo 16 and 17 also had the foot restraint.There are also some good diagrams on this page from the Apollo Flight Journal. |
