collectSPACE member Eddie Pugh originally prepared the following quiz for a British magazine on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Apollo 11.

He says the highest score so far is "a commendable 7".

Once you have tried the quiz for yourself, use the mouse highlight the area between the brackets to see the answers.

  • Which Russian probe might have caused problems for Apollo 11 near the Moon? [Luna 15]

  • What was PDI? [Powered Descent Initiation]

  • Eagle had two program alarms during the descent to the lunar surface. What was the number of the one that came barely 3000 feet above the surface? [1201]

  • Who, as Capcom, gave the crew the order to ignore this alarm?
    [Charlie Duke]

  • Who spoke the first words from the surface of the Moon?
[Aldrin - "Contact light". Armstrong's first words were, "Shutdown".]

  • One of the '11' crew described himself as, "A white male, age thirty eight, height 5 feet, 11 inches, weight 165 pounds, salary $17,000 per annum, resident of a Texas suburb with black spot on my roses." Who?
    [Mike Collins]

  • What was the purpose of the 'yellow card' carried on Columbia?
[Issued by the FAI it authorized records to be attempted on the flight.]

  • Which Earth tracking station received the first TV pictures from the surface of the Moon? [Honeysuckle Creek, Australia]

  • What significant event happened at 8:00 p.m. local time on Thursday July 10, 1969? [The final countdown for Apollo 11 started.]

  • What did the descending astronauts first see at 'High Gate'?
    [The lunar landing site]

  • What were BIGs? [Biological Isolation Garments]

  • On the return from the Moon the crew passed time by doing some planning for Apollo 12 based on the daily food intake of a shrew consisting of spaghetti and meatballs. Who was this for? [Alan Bean]

  • Eagle landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969. When was it announced officially by NASA where it had landed?
[July 29 after onboard film had been processed and examined]

  • Before landing Aldrin promised to look out for a 'bunny girl' on the Moon. Who was this? [Chango - a Chinese girl with her pet rabbit who had been banished to the Moon for stealing the pill of immortality]

  • What was the name of the recovery carrier for Apollo 11? [Hornet]

Please don't post your answers [or guesses]. Instead, post your score (remember: you can find the answers by highlighting the area between the two brackets after each question).

An embarrasing 5, but I was very close on most.

12.

I didn't know "Yellow card", the July 10 event (though I was very close), and the official location announcement question.

I got 9... almost 10, but I didn't think I knew the *specific* answer to the "bunny girl" question enough to count that one.

11.5 - I knew the landing site was not announced for some time after the mission, but not the exact date.

A lousy 6.

I should have followed Gary's example and just cheated.

Does anyone remember Mr Pugh's wonderful hand typed booklets full of manned spaceflight facts from the early 70s. I got mine from the US Embassy in London and treasure my copies to this day.

12 out of 15. Didn't know the yellow card, the 10 Jul date, nor the landing site confirmation. Always great to see a tough and detailed quiz with bits you've not heard before!

10. And even though I got the "First words from the surface" item, I now question the fact that Eagle actually was on the surface when this announcement was made (albeit it might have made it by the time the message reached the Earth).

5!

Embarrassing? Ashamed? Lousy? No, it's okay for me. Maybe someone will admit to have even less. There must be people somewhere that know even less than me.

But I respect the experts and their two-digit-scores!
