The Press Association: Moon speech 'a' slip of the tongue Astronaut Neil Armstrong's famous moon-landing transmission "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" was a slip of the tongue, according to new research.Armstrong has always insisted he actually said "one small step for a man" as he became the first man to step on to the moon in 1969 - but the crucial "a" was inaudible in the television transmission. Excuses given for the apparent blip include static interference or Armstrong's Ohio accent. But now, using the best quality recordings ever released by NASA, researchers Dr Chris Riley and forensic linguist Jon Olsson have concluded Armstrong, an otherwise eloquent speaker, omitted the word by accident - possibly due to the pressure of his workload. Additional articles: This is far from the first time this topic has been raised.collectSPACE: One small step for 'a' man... and machine [2006 discussion] |

I have to say, I think it's perfect as it was said. |

Oh please... not THAT, not AGAIN. The 40th celebration deserve better stories, no?(Not RP's fault who's only reporting the general medias. But after all, whatever was said or not, it would be a bit more clever for the US press to remember that the speech was made in English and not in Russian..) |

The trouble is it wasn't much of a story 40 years ago. A man may or may not have tripped over his tongue in a moment of extreme stress. I have enough trouble over the phone or PA at work and I go there everyday. No one had ever been to the Moon. |

Agree 100 percent. Discussing this subject is NOT what I want the A11 40th anniversary discussions to be about. |
