On Apollo 13, when the explosion occurred in the Service Module, the mission of Apollo 13 became a survival mission instead. Because of this, Jack Swigert's and Fred Haise's flight duties radically changed. For Haise, there was very little for him to do other than to get the Lunar Module activated, and then I assume that was more or less the end of his planned activities. For Swigert, I am wondering if he had any other Command Module Pilot duties for the rest of the flight. I ask this because it has been my impression that any other tasks for the duration of the mission that would have been typically performed by the Command Module Pilot were now to be performed by the Commander, Jim Lovell. The end result being that Swigert and Haise became essentially passengers on the mission while Lovell performed all major remaining flight duties. Is this correct? |

No. Haise still had duties. Any LM piloting require two people. He still had to monitor and keep the LM operating. Lovell did less, he basically just piloted. |

Swigert may have had more "down" time since there wasn't a lunar landing but he certainly had his hands full with the CM checklist, activation and reentry. | |
