I know it has been done before but this is a variation with a twist.

Which two of the astronauts you have met would you select to be your crew mates on an Apollo lunar landing flight?

My selection is Al Worden and Ken Mattingly. They both have a dry wit and the sort of keen sense of humour that appeals to me and they have shown themselves adept at solving in flight problems. I might even be prepared to stay in the CM whilst they took the LM down for a landing. Both deserved the chance to be 'moonwalkers'.

Dick Gordon and I would land at Tycho crater while Joe Engle remained in lunar orbit.

Randy, with a crew like that you would have been the focus of so many pranks and gotchas you would not have know if you were coming or going!

  • Me as commander.
  • Michael Collins as LMP
  • Neil Armstrong as CMP
I imagine it would be fun to explore the lunar surface with Collins. And, I can't think of anyone better to be waiting in lunar orbit to take us home.

  • Me (Commander)
  • Neil Armstrong (Lunar Module Pilot)
  • Ken Mattingly (CMP)
I can't think of anybody better for each role... and Armstrong isn't bad either.

This would put two Freds together on the surface of the moon. I can't think of a better scenario.

Going with the assumption that none of the other crew had done their real-life landings before the one this crew list is for...
  • CDR: Yours Truly
  • LMP: Al Bean
  • CMP: Al Worden
I can hear it now, "Houston, This is the Lee and Beano show, coming to you from Copernicus crater..."

Not to mention that the onboard tapes and the air to ground transmissions would be a hoot to read.

At what altitude, during your decent, do you think that Schirra would radio you to ask, "Are you a turtle?" 50 feet or 10 feet?

Well no-one said they had to be Apollo astronauts and I'd aim to have fun so of those I've met:
  • CDR: "Hoot" Gibson
  • CMP: Jim Lovell
  • LMP: And that leaves me in the "tourist" slot.
All navy crew. Sadly I never met Pete Conrad but suspect he may have pipped Hoot.

Wally wouldn't have phrased it quite like that. I'm happy to report that both my selected crew mates still are.
