Were the Block 2 Apollo command modules (CMs) manufactured prior to the Apollo 1 fire and later modified or were they constructed after the fire? Does anyone have the manufacture dates of CMs #098 through #119?

I do not have the manufacturing dates handy, but the Block 2 design was mature before the fire. Fore example, the McDivitt crew was inside CM-101 at North American in Downey on the day of the fire.As you probably know, after the fire, the decision was made to delete any manned Block 1 flights and to proceed with Block 2 flights in vehicles modified (but not really totally redesigned) to make them more fire resistant. The remaining Block 1 CMs flew on the first two Saturn V flights to test the general spacecraft capability for high-speed re-entry, and included new Block 2 features such as the unified hatch. | |
