I know the story behind the scandal itself with the Apollo 15 crew taking the covers with. However, I have read that Jack Swigert lost out on a spot as CMP on the ASTP mission because of his involvement in the scandal. As everyone knows, Swigert was not on Apollo 15 nor was he a member of the backup or support crews. So, my question is what was his involvement in the scandal? He must have done something to warrant being replaced on the ASTP mission by Vance Brand. |

According to Slayton's book, Swigert's mistake was that he lied to NASA about having signed any of those envelopes for the same German dealer who did business with the Apollo 15 crew. He changed his mind a few weeks later, and George Low removed him from the ASTP crew. |

Swigert didn't sign any postal covers that got him into trouble, but instead, signed 500 Rumanian Apollo 13 souvenir stamps for money. When Deke asked him about it, along with other involved-signing astronauts, he denied knowing anything about it. Later, he confessed, and said he did in fact sign for Sieger. By not telling the truth at first, though, he was dropped for an upcoming Apollo seat assignment (which became the CMP slot for Apollo-Soyuz in 1975). | |
