Does anyone know the land masses that can be seen in the famous color Apollo 8 picture of earth? One is on the lower left and the other is on the lower right.

The lower left looks to me like the southern tip of Africa and the lower right is Antarctica.

Here's a hi-res image. There looks to be something at the top, too.

I did once use the Apollo 17 transcript and the astronomy program "Starry Night" to make a view of the Earth from the moon that looked just like the Apollo 17 "Blue Marble" image.

I'll bet the same could be done with the Apollo 8 image.

I don't have Starry Night on this PC but I will try to find it when I go to my mum's next.

Africa is the major land mass, Antarctica is to the left, and South America is at the top.

Just like on the real world!

Based on looking at earlier shots taken on the mission (different lighting and weather patterns, but a good idea of the general view) I think Mark is probably correct.
