Does anyone know the land masses that can be seen in the famous color Apollo 8 picture of earth? One is on the lower left and the other is on the lower right. |

The lower left looks to me like the southern tip of Africa and the lower right is Antarctica. |

I did once use the Apollo 17 transcript and the astronomy program "Starry Night" to make a view of the Earth from the moon that looked just like the Apollo 17 "Blue Marble" image.I'll bet the same could be done with the Apollo 8 image. I don't have Starry Night on this PC but I will try to find it when I go to my mum's next. |

Africa is the major land mass, Antarctica is to the left, and South America is at the top.Just like on the real world! |

Based on looking at earlier shots taken on the mission (different lighting and weather patterns, but a good idea of the general view) I think Mark is probably correct. |
