My eldest daughter has chosen the subject of the U.S. public's opinion on the space race for her final year degree course dissertation, which must be 12,000 words.

We would be grateful if members of this group could steer us to any relevant books, publications, websites, etc. on U.S. public opinion about the space program from it's start up to the present day.

We live in the UK. Thanking members in anticipation.

Roger Launius, former NASA chief historian and senior curator in the division of space history at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum has written a book that addresses this question and collects the data from numerous polls and public opinion surveys that have been conducted over the years.

Unfortunately, After Apollo is not due for release until Aug. 2013.

Fortunately, in the course of his writing this book, Launius has shared some of his research and findings on blog. For example, see his Aug. 16, 2010 entry, Exploding the Myth of Popular Support for Project Apollo.

Thank you to Robert, Ray, and Eddie for their responses and help so far.

I would still welcome further thoughts and information on this topic. Thanks once again.

You might try contacting Roger Launius directly. He has always been very willing to help students with research, mentoring, or just guidance. He likely has more condensed versions (such as various papers/speeches) of his forthcoming book, as I've seen him present such material on several occasions.
